Ten Tools Every RV’er Should Carry

Whether you are towing an RV trailer, fifth wheel, or driving a class A,B,C RV here is my list of ten tools you should carry and actually likely use during your road adventures. This is based off of my own journeys and frequent tool usage and what I found handy to have with me when needed.

1. Cordless Drill/Driver

Having a cordless drill/driver on hand is invaluable. It comes in handy as you frequently tighten screws and bolts, install and deinstall items, and generally maintain your RV.

2. Cordless Impact Wrench

A cordless impact wrench may seem a lot to carry but when you are changing tires and trying to get stubborn lug nuts loosened this will become your favorite tool. Also very handy to have when tightening large hitch bolts and other big jobs around the RV.

3. Telescoping Ladder

I carry a telescoping ladder with me on any extended trips so I can use it to work around the RV roof line and slide outs without having to stand on the roof and hang over the side dangerously. Very handy to just lean this ladder on the side of the RV and work on roof edges, gutters, top of windows and awnings.

4. Socket Set

A socket set is a must-have to use around the RV to use on nuts and bolts around the RV. It is just a fact of life of an RV, things loosen and break as you travel down the road. You will use this essential tool often.

5. 12V Power Probe

Along with a multimeter, having a 12V probe on hand provides a quick way to probe your RV or tow vehicle for 12V power. Since so much of the truck and RV runs off of 12VDC this tool provides a fast way to troubleshoot 12V problems in cables and connectors.

6. Multimeter

Along with a 12V probe, a multimeter is a great all around tool to have on hand to probe for both 12VDC and 120VAC power around the RV. Along with the multimeter having a non-contact voltage pen and an outlet tester will equip you for optimum testing and troubleshooting of RV power. 7. Plumbing Crimp Tool

Plumbing is critical in an RV for enjoyable camping experiences but having water leaks is also a frustrating experience. Having a crimp tool on hand to repair plumbing lines, install new plumbing fixtures, and upgrade plumbing connections is invaluable. Get one of these and keep it on hand for emergency usage.

8. Water Meter

Having a water meter on hand is crucial to prevent water problems of overfilling holding tanks on the RV. The last thing you want to do is overfill a black or gray tank while flushing them out and driving sewage into the RV, or worse yet, bursting the tank causing a very expensive repair bill.

9. Plastic Chisels

These handy tools are always on hand in my truck. Very useful to use for scraping caulking and sealants around the RV avoiding scratches and scrapes using screwdrivers or razor blades to do it. They can be sharpened as needed as you use them to keep the soft edge for optimum scraping/chiseling.

10. Rubber Mallet

The items is often overlooked but very handy to have on hand to pound wheel chocks in when setting up or other items needing a good whack while avoiding damaging it. Regular metal hammers will damage items while a rubber mallet will not.
